Miguel,. Dialysis is performed for many reasons, but kidney failure is the most common. For kidney failure, many doctors recommend dialysis when urine output is low and certain conditions develop. For acute kidney failure, doctors continue dialysis until the person’s blood test results indicate that adequate kidney function has been restored. For people with chronic kidney failure, dialysis may be used as long-term therapy or as a temporary measure until a kidney can be transplanted. The kidneys’ function are to filter the blood. All the blood in the body passes through the kidneys several times a day. The kidneys remove wastes, control the body’s fluid balance, and regulate the balance of electrolytes. As the kidneys filter blood, they create urine, which collects in the kidneys’ pelvis – funnel-shaped structures that drain down tubes called ureters to the bladder. Each kidney contains around a million units called nephrons, each of which is a microscopic filter for blood. It is possible to lose as much as 90% of kidney function without experiencing any symptoms or problems. So when dialysis is chosen it is because the function of the kidney(s) is of such a reduced volume as to require assistance. If any part of the kidney is working, then that function will continue ? but it will have been assessed as so low an output as to require mechanical assistance. The amount of urine output in dialysis patients equates to fluid that does not need to be removed with dialysis (either peritoneal or haemodialysis). In haemodialysis, decreasing fluid removal with each dialysis treatment decreases the possibility of intradialytic hypotension, which can lead to myocardial stunning, ischemia, and increased mortality.. . .
